CASE STUDY OF BOILER USING SOLAR SYSTEM

Novus, one of the India’s leading Solar Water Heating Companies, have installed large scale solar water heating systems that cater to the thermal needs of the hospitality industry. When hotels, hospitals, mills in the world are not even thinking of the negative impact they have on the environment, A leading Hotel has collaborated with Novus in successfully commissioning ALCHI Solar Water Heaters for fulfilling the thermal energy requirements. This installation has been operational for over a year now and it saves an equivalent of almost 40,000- 42,000 litres of fossil fuel (furnace oil) per annum, which amounts to a reduction in CO2 emissions by almost 110 - 130 tons per annum! ALCHI, Solar Water Heating is an indigenous water solar thermal system developed by Novus. Most of the Hotels, hospitals, mills are credited with being a pioneer in initiating a number of environment friendly changes. It is one of the few carbon neutral companies in India. The pay back period is calculated at 2.5 years.


The Challenges

Novus faced several hurdles when they decided to go for use of solar water heating thermal systems to reduce the use of polluting fuels. There was no precedent of any such installation. There were issues ranging from economic feasibility to space constraints. There were even more basic questions like the best application of such a solar thermal system in such a hotel keeping in mind the cost vs benefits and the integration requirement; how to hide such a system so as to maintain the aesthetic look of the building and how to ensure that the system performs as promised, as many other Solar Water Heating System thermal technologies are either dysfunctional or operating at very low efficiencies.


Solution

After studying the requirements and constraints of the customers, and understanding how these can be technologically and economically met by harnessing solar thermal energy, we recommended the use of Solar Water Heating thermal systems for all their thermal requirements. After a detailed evaluation of various solar thermal technologies and keeping in mind the space constraints and integration requirements. A leading Hotel has decided to install of Novus’s Alchi Solar Water Heater.

The Details: Two Alchi Solar Water Heater with a combined area of 72 sq.mt generate steam which is used for the hotel’s laundry, cooking and other heating requirements. One of these Alchi Solar Water Heater is installed on top of the existing banquet hall, while the other Alchi Solar Water Heating is installed on ground in the backyard of the hotel, with a footprint area of less than 6m x 8m & hospital building terrace and mill terrace floor. The civil engineering challenges were innovatively handled by our engineers.

Flow of Operation: A sample process of generating hot water with the help of ALCHI Solar Water Heating in hotel is as explained in the diagram:

 

Step 1: At the start of the day, the concentrated solar thermal system (ALCHI Collector) draws water from the feed water tank to generate hot water.
Step 2: Hot Water delivery from collectors to various applications starts as soon as the required hot water delivery.y
Step 3: The balance hot water It gets distributed to various applications from here. In the absence of sun, the existing boiler is used to feed steam to the common header.

Concluding Remarks:

Novus has successfully demonstrated the use of solar thermal systems in the hotel industry, Hospitals, Mills by installing ALCHI Solar Water Heating System at , a leading hotel satisfying its thermal energy needs in laundry, cooking, bathing and other applications. Not only has the system been operating successfully, but the economics of the investment also makes a strong case for all hotels install such systems. Contrary to being an eye-sore, the ALCHI Solar Water Heating System installation has been an attraction for all its peoples!
